Meet Immaculate
Immaculate is now 17 years old and has one brother who is living on the street in Kigali.
At a young age, Immaculate’s father separated from her mother and he looked after Immaculate in her early years until he unfortunately died from illness. Immaculate then went to live with her grandmother who was very old and lacked the money to even look after herself.
Immaculate left her grandmother and went to look for a job where she could get food and clothes. After two years working as a house girl, Immaculate was taken by her boss to the police accusing her of theft from the house. At this point Immaculate was about 10 years old. The police could not put her in prison because she was so young and they asked her boss to take her back and try looking after her as her own child. However, the boss lady chased her away and she immediately joined street life.
In 2012, when Immaculate was 14 years old, she was found on the streets by nuns, who brought her to SACCA. At SACCA, Immaculate rejoined primary school (in Primary 2). After three years in the Girls' centre, when 17 years old, Immaculate suggested she switch her studies to vocational training. She completed a hairdressing course in September 2019.
SACCA has located Immaculate's grandmother; she is very old and living without support. Immaculate is unhappy that she isn't in a position to help her grandmother and this will be her first priority when she gets a job. As a senior girl, Immaculate is responsible for other girls at the centre and helps give advice to other children.
